Palestinian equal rights cheered on The Daily Show

by Yaniv Reich on October 29, 2009

In the annals of American media coverage of Israel/Palestine, yesterday’s Daily Show with Jon Stewart was a watershed. On national TV, Jon Stewart interviewed Anna Baltzer and Mustafa Barghouti, advocates for equal Palestinian rights.

They got on TV, they argued for equal Palestinian rights, they advocated for security and democracy for both peoples, they responded to hecklers with dignity, and they were cheered by the audience—repeatedly. As Mondoweiss frames it, Palestinian equal rights have hit the Daily Show’s progressive agenda. We can only hope that Stewart continues to bring his biting wit and mocking sense of humor to cut down lunatics all over Israel/Palestine.

When a heckler from the crowd shouted “liar”, Barghouti responded brilliantly:

This severe reaction sometime reflects certain nervousness on the side of people who are afraid of change. And the change is happening, the change is coming. Palestinians like everybody else are entitled to the same freedom that Jewish people should have. That’s what we are calling for—equal rights.

The whole interview is remarkable. Watch it here:

Haven’t watched the Daily Show clips yet, but surely Jon Stewart is the best interviewer in the country (I base this comment on his previous work). If anyone in the media can make sense of complex issues, ask the hard questions that need to be asked (or even the easy questions that the rest of the media don’t have the guts to ask), and bring the key points to the masses, it is him. He should become an integral part of every public debate.
