Enter Robert Gibbs, White House press secretary, to “rebuke” Israel for the blatant provocation:
“Neither party should engage in efforts or take actions that could unilaterally preempt, or appear to preempt, negotiations,” said Robert Gibbs. “Rather, both parties should return to negotiations without preconditions as soon as possible.”
There you have it, folks. Israel, a state which receives from the US something close to $500 in annual aid for each of its citizens (i.e. $3–5 billion dollars, depending on the year), has told its primary benefactor to fuck off. And with a sheepish face, Obama can only muster the courage to mumble that both parties ought to negotiate more.
If Obama had demonstrated anything like an original thought on the conflict, I would go out on a limb and assert that he is actually for the one-state solution, which his administration is doing its utmost to bring out. Alas, I have not seen a modicum of such novel thought and therefore believe he is simply a coward, beholden and sycophantic to the Israel lobby for his re-election prospects.
That’s not change: that’s precisely nothing you can believe in.
